Martin H.M Schreiber

Martin HM Schreiber is a photographer of international acclaim currently based in France. Through his photography, especially his black and white nudes, he uses his vision and talent to create images that leave a lasting expression.

Schreiber strives to achieve perfect harmony in his compositions. For the artist, the nude figure allows hidden and subtle meanings to allude to the qualities and emotions encompassed within. He considers photography the perfect vehicle to capture moments, feelings, and even ideas frozen in time. His images preserve both the extraordinary and ordinary emotions and thoughts, creating a record on film.

Born in 1946 in Prague, Czechoslovakia, he and his family immigrated to the United States in 1952. Growing up in Manhattan, New York, he was a creative child and often nurtured his interest in art by visiting museums and art galleries. Eventually, as a teenager, he embraced his interest in photography when his father returned from a trip to Japan with a simple 35mm range finder camera, a Yashica Lynx 1000. From then on, his passion for photography grew as he began photographing everything, such as his father’s roses. He even submitted his work to his first photographic competition, where he won third place in the color category for the New York World-Telegram and Sun.

In 1965, he joined the United States Army and attended the Photo Lab School while enlisted. After being honorably discharged in 1968, he decided to make photography a full-time profession. Admitted with advanced placement, he went to the School of Visual Arts in New York for a semester before deciding to pursue his career independently. By 1969, he started his first job as a photographer, the official photographer for an archeological expedition. Schreiber struggled to establish his career from 1971 to 1976 until he was offered a position at the Parsons School of Design/The New School in New York City by Ben Fernandez, the then head of the photography department in 1977.

For almost seven years, he taught the course 'Photographing The Nude' at Parsons. Additionally, he taught a course on basic photography at The School of Visual Arts. In 1980, his first book BODYSCAPES captured a series of nudes set in the studio and out in nature. Two years later, in 1982, he published Cowboys, his renowned publication showcasing and documenting the annual life of an American cowboy. However, by 1989 he moved to Paris as his photographic career was at a standstill in the United States.

Schreiber has been creating nude photographs since the early 1970s. His artful approach embraces his love for the female figure and highlights the nude as a challenging yet fun subject. He finds all themes fascinating and likes to photograph everything and anything. He photographs and embraces models of both genders, sizes, and ages. His female nude photography often follows a sculptural style and enhances the curves and full-bodied allure of the female body, young or old.

His inspiration for a photograph comes from everything and everywhere. Schreiber embraces his everyday experiences and often lets sound, smell, and sight help dictate his ideas. Earlier in his career, his work found inspiration from modern artists such as Marc Chagall, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Max Beckmann, Otto Dix, Joseph Cornell, and René Magritte. Furthermore, the styles of Impressionism and Cubism also influenced his artistic approach. As his practice developed, Schreiber found inspiration from the work of more contemporary photographers. Some of his influences include American landscape photographer Ansel Adams, mentor and American photojournalist Eugene Smith, American fashion and portrait photographers Irving Penn and Richard Avedon, French fashion photographer Guy Bourdin, American commercial photographer Hiro (Yasuhiro Wakabayashi), Czech photographer Josef Sudek, and groundbreaking Hungarian photographer André Kertész and English photographer Bill Brandt.

Schreiber’s photographs have been exhibited in over eighty solo and group exhibitions in museums and galleries across Australia, France, Singapore, Russia, England, Turkey, Czech Republic, the United States, and Colombia. His artworks are part of both public and private collections across the globe, most notably the International Center of Photography, the New York Public Library, the Philip Morris American West Art Collection, Yale Beineke Rare Book & Manuscript Library, and even the collections of his Royal Highness Prince Charles and former United States President Ronald Reagan.

His photographic works featured in twenty published books. Furthermore, his photographs have printed internationally in major newspapers and magazines such as Art in America, The New York Times Magazine, Time, and Vogue among many other magazines and newspapers worldwide. Most notably, his nude photographs of Madonna, some of his most notorious work, published in Playboy’s 1985 September issue.

Aside from nude photography, Schreiber does fashion, editorial, and reportage capturing daily life. He also creates sculpture and multimedia art pieces and constructions.
